Instituto de Educacion Popular del Sur de California Access to Higher Education California Zone (Choose different project.)Teens In Action is a youth project of the Instituto de Educación Popular del Sur de California (IDEPSCA) that works with Pasadena youth to develop and strengthen youth leadership development, and access to higher education.
Teens in Action’s mission is to support the youth in our community through the day to day challenges we all face such as drugs, alcohol, gangs, lack of academic achievements, fighting against a society that ignores us, and patronizes us, by participating in our community. IDEPSCA uses popular education methodology, to actively engage the youth in unique experiences that will help them understand the concept of "empowerment", and the importance of their role in society. Taking on the responsibility to share their individual experiences, accomplishments, ideas, and emotions, as they learn to embrace their culture and take ownership of it.
Teens in Action’s empowerment begins with their service-learning project with La Escuelita de la Comunidad, the Little Community School to gain the necessary skills by assisting the teachers at La Escuelita in tutoring children and other students, creating the curriculum, and co-teaching the English as a Second Language (ESL) and Spanish Literacy classes. The youth will also provide childcare for parents in the literacy, and ESL classes the Little Community School offers.
Teens In Action’s direct involvement in their schools lead them to invite youth to participate in the La Escuelita’s service-learning project. Parents and youth will together elaborate Academic Work Plans for students, incorporating a service-learning component as well as the A-G requirements. Key issues to be addressed in the monthly meetings include How to Excel in advanced courses; Passing the California High School Exit Exam; Alternative paths to college preparatory courses; and undocumented students.
