Llano Grande Center Access to Higher Education Texas Zone (Choose different project.)The Llano Grande Center has always focused on college access as a guiding principle in its work of creating meaningful change here in our small South Texas community. Now, with the support of State Farm, we are able to expand that work in order to reach more families, and broaden it to include more resources for the successful future of our children.
With the belief that our youth are capable of being true, active leaders in our community, a major component of this initiative is the Youth Leadership Team – a group of 20 Edcouch-Elsa High School students trained by the Llano Grande Center in leadership, the college application process, and financial aid. With an acute understanding of the history of our underserved community, and the challenges and insecurities that face many students and their families here – many of whom will be applying to college for the first time – our Youth Leadership Team will be available during school and after-hours to provide expert guidance and support to everyone who comes to our office.
The second component of this initiative hinges on informing a wider spectrum of our community about the opportunities for going to college, and the strategies available to help pay for it. While the Llano Grande Center has had much success in helping students attend the most prestigious schools in the country, this program aims to help ALL students and their families achieve their dream of college by building knowledge and access. We will embark in an outreach campaign that includes quarterly informational mail-outs to the parents of every student at Edcouch-Elsa HS, as well as invitations to college events being sponsored by the Llano Grande Center or Edcouch-Elsa HS. The Center will also set up appointments to work with students and their families one-on-one to answer any questions and provide tools and guidance for financing their college dreams.
